Housing now more affordable in Canada: RBC | Wednesday, 22 April 2009 Affordability is a key concern among buyers, but today's economic conditions are helping alleviate this stress as prices drop, allowing those that were on the fence to make a purchase. "Going forward, low mortgage rates and persisting downward pressure on housing prices will continue to help repair affordability although slowing income growth will act as a restraint," says Robert Hogue, senior economist at RBC, Toronto. Fourth quarter 2008 research by RBC, which measured the proportion of pre-tax household income needed to own a home, found that affordability improved across Canada up to 3.5 percentage points. This is due in part to rising family income, as well as lower lending rates. For example, the Bank of Canada has further reduced the overnight rate to 0.25%, from 4.5% in about a year. Certain areas in the country are more affordable than others, including Atlantic Canada, Manitoba and Quebec, according to RBC's research.
